100% VEGAN Cruelty-Free Brands Available in Ireland

Today, there are many brands that are certified cruelty-free. However, it is unfortunate that some of these brands do still use animal-derived ingredients, which poses the debate: is a product 100% cruelty-free, if it is not 100% vegan? Realistically, a portion of the consumer market will relentlessly keep purchasing their favourite cosmetics from cruelty-free brands that may not be vegan, so Flawless and Pawless highlights ALL cruelty-free brands- and particularly vegan ones, so the consumer knows the option is there.

All of the above said, most cruelty-free brands do offer an array of 100% vegan cosmetics in their line. When you are shopping for vegan products from a cruelty-free brand that’s not 100% vegan, look out for a ‘vegan’ symbol on their packaging, to determine which products within the range are 100% vegan.

To be certain that a brand is certified 100% cruelty-free AND vegan, look a combination of the following certifications coordinated by the following organisations:

Below is the official Flawless and Pawless list for 100% cruelty-free AND vegan cosmetic brands. These are all brands that are either available in Ireland or that ship to Ireland. Please note that the list is constantly being updated, so make sure to check again before you go ahead with your next cruelty-free/vegan purchase!

To Buy or Not to Buy? My Stance on Cruelty Free Brands Owned by Parent Companies That Test on Animals

It can be simple enough to shop cruelty-free by sticking to purchasing products with official certification labels on their packaging. However, one of the most common objections I face as a cruelty-free blogger is a cruelty-free consumer’s disgust when it comes to purchasing from brands that are owned by a parent company who sells in China, where it is still required by law for cosmetics to be tested on animals. A tricky subject to understand, here is all you need to know about non-independent cruelty-free cosmetic brands.

Better Than Sex mascara by Too Faced, certified by PETA but owned by Esteé Lauder

1. A cruelty-free brand is a cruelty-free brand.

Any company who is officially certified by one of the three official certification companies (Leaping Bunny, PETA or Choose Cruelty Free) does NOT sell their brand in China, does not allow their suppliers/manufacturers/third parties to test on animals on their behalf, and does not conduct tests on animals themselves- regardless of whether their parent company does. While each of these certifications is official, the Leaping Bunny is the most reliable as it scrutinises the entire supply chain and includes independent audits.

2. Your money does go to the parent company.

Ultimately, if you purchase from a cruelty-free brand that is owned by a parent company, a portion of your spending does go to the parent company. It is at the consumer’s discretion whether or not they wish to purchase from these brands, and it is an understandable ongoing debate that buy purchasing from these brands, you are helping to fund further animal testing under the regulation’s of the parent company- which is the opposite of what we want.

3. Purchasing from a cruelty-free brand that is owned by a parent company that tests on animals sends a powerful message.

The consumer market speaks loudly in the world of business, and by choosing to purchase products from the cruelty-free brands and NOT the parent company’s, you are politely but efficiently showing the parent company that you value ethically-produced cosmetic products.

So… to buy or not to buy?

This decision is entirely up to you. As my first point says, a cruelty-free brand is a cruelty-free brand. They do not sell in China. They do not condone animal cosmetic tests. They do not test on animals, and have had background checks in the process of acheiving their official certifications. However, it is always best to stick to purchasing independent, certified cruelty-free cosmetic brands, as that way you are being 100% cruelty-free. But realistically, many cruelty-free brands that are owned by a parent company are still extremely popular in the consumer market- so if you decide to continue purchasing them, give up purchasing from their parent company, as this will send a loud message to them.

Brands To Avoid

The following is a list I have compiled of worldwide brands who still test on animals that are available in Ireland. The majority of these brands are ‘required by law’ to test on animals, which means they most likely sell in China, where there is no animal welfare law in place.

Why Aren’t These Brands Cruelty-Free?

The brands below take part in one of more of the following practices:

  • The brand is ‘required by law’ to test on animals
  • The brand tests on animals themselves
  • The brand allows third parties to test on animals on their behalf
  • The brand allows its raw ingredients/formulations/finished products to be tested on animals
  • The brand allows its suppliers/manufacturers to test on animals
  • The brand is sold in mainland China, where it is required by law for all cosmetics to be tested on animals.

Many of these brands are owned by the parent companies of the world that conduct animal testing for their products. The main parent companies of the cosmetic world are:

The Must-Have Vegan Lip Plumper Every Lip Lover Needs

When it comes to plumping lip glosses, my mind instantly transports ten years ago to trying out super stingy, eye-watering lip plumping glosses that were a freebie with teen magazines. Needless to say, my personal experience in the past with lip plumping glosses had been negative for a decade… until I came across this one.

CODE LIP is the ultimate cruelty-free, plant-based lip plumping lip gloss that has not only converted my opinion on these products, but has also confirmed for me that every lip lover needs to get their hands on one of these. The lip gloss is full of hydrating and nourishing ingredients, which work together to inflate the lips for a natural, but subtle look.

Does it tingle?

Hell, yeah! The lipgloss tingles and feels like you have just rubbed cayenne pepper all over your lips. However, unlike many other plumpers on the market, CODE Lip does NOT sting. The tingle is super minty and refreshing, and is only a temporary feeling upon application, so the lips don’t feel uncomfortable.

The Magic Ingredient?

Hiliurlip. This miracle ingredient is like the newer and cooler version of Hyaluronic Acid, and is completely vegan friendly. Hiliurlip redifines the natural contours of the lips and plumps up their volume, so you can rock your inner Kylie any day.

code lip 3

Is it coloured?

Slightly! The lip gloss coats the lips in a subtle film of rosey pink. I personally love wearing it on its own when I head to the gym.

Where can I buy it?

Oh, and there’s free worldwide delivery with all orders.

CODE Beautiful is certified by PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies program.

The Cruelty Free Dupes from Primark’s Leaping Bunny certified PS Range

Flawless and Pawless is delighted to announce that Primark’s PS beauty range has been officially Leaping Bunny Certified! I was invited to attend an exciting launch where the CEO (and my idol) of Cruelty Free International- the coordinators of the Leaping Bunny program- , Michelle Thew, announced the exciting and revolutionary news.

“If Primark can do this, anybody can.” Thew claimed- a statement that really settled in my mind that the world is recognising the demand for cruelty-free cosmetics. The beauty industry is going in the right direction.

The Leaping Bunny Program is the only internationally recognised cruelty-free certification program in the world, as the program scrutinises a company’s entire supply chain and requires ongoing independent audits from a company and its suppliers- so, as you can imagine, becoming Leaping Bunny certified is kind of a big deal. For those of you who follow me, you will know that Leaping Bunny is my certification preference when purchasing cruelty-free cosmetics, as time and time again it has always proven to be the most reliable certification in the world.

I am delighted to have teamed up with Primark to show you all some of the amazing products from the newly-certified PS beauty range. Not only this, but I will be showing you the products from the PS range that are cruelty-free dupes for high end, non-cruelty-free products. With almost every makeup item being priced under €6.00, and due to the brand’s high quality and excellent performance, PS is the one-stop beauty brand to transform your beauty kit into a cruelty-free collection.

PS My Perfect Colour Velvet Finish Foundation / Estée Lauder Double Wear

You may have heard about this uncanny dupe for one of the best-selling (but unfortunately, not cruelty-free) foundations on the market; Estée Lauder Double Wear. People love Double Wear as it provides excellent coverage, while staying in place for hours- but, the foundation can make the skin look a bit dry. The My Perfect Colour Mattifying Foundation is an exact dupe for Double Wear, but without leaving the skin looking dry! The foundation also contains SPF 30. It’s such a steal.

PS My Perfect Colour Mattifying Foundation, €6.00

PS Face and Body Strobe Cream / M.A.C. Strobe Cream

That’s right, kids. You don’t need to break the bank to get strobing. Primark’s Face and Body Strobe Cream has become one of my favourite makeup products of all time. The product comes in a variety of different colours to suit all skin tones, and it is easier to work with- in my opinion- than M.A.C.’s Strobe Cream. Perfect for use on the collarbones, shoulders, legs- oh, god damn it, just lather it on everywhere, it’s that gorgeous!

PS Face and Body Strobe Cream, €4.00

PS Brow Pencil / Benefit Precisely My Brow

This is the perfect eyebrow pencil for anyone whose eyebrows are sparse. The pencil is so, sooo skinny that one can literally draw on hairs, mimicking the natural growth of the brows. The versatile shades are suitable for all hair colours, and the little spoolie at the opposite end is perfect for combing the brows into place. The style of this Primark product is almost identical to Benefit’s Precisely My Brow eyebrow pencil- except this one is cruelty-free, and only €1.50. Bargain!

Primark PS Brow Sketch, €1.50

PS Sultry Lashes

For years, Primark’s Sultry Lashes have been my go-to strip lashes on my clients as a makeup artist. Not only are they probably some of the cheapest false eyelashes on the market, but they are ridiculously easy to apply. The lashes do not poke you in the eye as much as some more expensive strip lashes do, and their glue dries really quickly. While these lashes aren’t exactly a dupe for a high end product, they are different to many eyelashes on the market today; they’re synthetic. No mink, no silk. That is a winner.

Primark PS Sultry Lashes, €1.50

PS Easy on the Eyes Two-Phase Makeup Remover / Lancome Bi Facil Makeup Remover

Known to be one of the most popular makeup removers on the market, Lancome’s Bi Facil Makeup Remover is a staple favourite of both professional makeup artists and makeup lovers. While it may indeed be an efficient product, it is unfortunately not cruelty-free, so I was delighted to discover this gem from Primark’s PS range. Easy on the Eyes Two-Phase Makeup Remover removes makeup in one simple step, without the need to continuously rub the eyes. The remover disolves eyelash glue and waterproof mascara, and can even take off the most stubborn of liquid lipsticks.

PS Lip Liner – Berry / M.A.C. Lip Liner – Whirl

Whirl is one of M.A.C.’s bestselling lip liners due to its gorgeous, neutral tone and long-lasting finish. It can be difficult to find a product that can amount to a M.A.C. lip liner’s reputation, but I strongly believe that PS’ Lip Liner in the shade Berry is one the best cruelty-free dupe I have found to date. The lip liner is practically identical in colour, and I can safely say that- after a few beverages on a night out- this lip liner does not budge. I only had to top it up after about three hours, which made my night out a lil’ bit easier!

Primark PS Lip Liner, Toffee, €1.50

PS So Peachy Blush / Benefit Coralista

Nothing screams ‘I’M HEALTHY!’ more than a natural, peachy glow. Primark’s PS So Peachy Blush is a powder, compact blush, that is identical to Benefit’s Coralista blush. I fell in love with not only the colour and quality of the blush, but its clever packaging; the container is extra bulky and doesn’t smother the blush itself, hence preventing breakage. This has been the first blush I have found that does not break when I drop it on the ground (yes, I deliberately threw it to test it) due to its practical packaging. Ideal for those who travel often!

Primark PS High Pigment Blush, So Peachy, €2.50

PS Fine Liner Pen / L’Oreal Super Liner Perfect Slim

When it comes to liquid liners, it can be difficult to find one that suits your own level of expertise. For those who are experienced liquid liner users, liquid liner pots and gel liners are heroes. But for those who can barely draw a straight line without their hand shaking, pen liners are the best option. This liner from PS is the most budget-friendly liquid pen liner on the market today, and it provides as good a finish as most drugstore brands. The liner is very similar to L’Oreal’s pen liner, which also has an ultra thin, slightly longer-than-usual felt tip. The colour is not jet black, but is black enough to compliment any eye makeup look. It lasts all day, too!

Tan with Vita Liberata at Peaches and Lime Beauty Salon

Luckily, Vita Liberata ticks all the boxes when it comes to cruelty-free and toxin-free tanning! The formula is free from typical fake-tan odours and provides a streak-free, super-hydrating colour. At Peaches and Lime Beauty Salon in the heart of Stillorgan, Co. Dublin, organic and non-toxic beauty is at the heart of the salon’s ethos. Vegan Eyelash Extensions at Elysian Brows

If you are someone who likes a little bit of extra glam, eyelash extensions are probably a must for your wedding day. With Irish mink farms still being allowed to be run, it’s important to only avail of synthetic mink lashes so as to avoid supporting this vile industry. Elysian Brows’ Semi-Permanent Lashes treatment includes a full set of luxury semi-permanent synthetic mink hairs, which last up to 4-6 weeks. These lashes are so comfortable and naturally beautifying that it will make your wedding makeup so much easier to figure out!

Semi-Permanent Lashes, €120.00, available at Elysian Brows

Beauty and the Beat: Get Festival-Ready the Cruelty Free Way!

No more lemsip, hello suncream! With the likes of Body and Soul, Knockanstockan, Forbidden Fruit, Longitude and Electric Picnic rapidly approaching, it’s time to prepare yourself for the muddy ground, sweaty raves, several days of allowing your hair to run wild and all of the challenges the camping environment presents to beauty fanatics. Luckily, there are some spectacular cruelty-free as well as vegan festival beauty finds that can make these problems that little bit easier.

First and foremost, look after yourself!

I know how hard it is to remove your make-up when the sun has already risen, you’re almost convinced you drank your bodyweight in alcohol and all you want to do is finally sleep after partying all night. However, not banishing the icky remains of yesterday from your face will leave your skin feeling worse than you do the next day! So pack your skincare heroes to make sure you look after your skin while it protects you.

Cleanse for a fresh start.

This is the part you will not want to do when it comes down to it. Luckily, Aldi’s Leaping Bunny certified Lacura range’s Charcoal Micellar Water removes makeup as quickly as one removes one’s wellies at the end of the night. The combination of charcoal powder and cleansing and purifying micellar water helpt to remove dirt and grime in one step, leaving the skin fresh and ready for a new face of makeup the next day.

Another addition to add to your festival cleansing regime are Lacura’s Charcoal Face Wipes. The pack of 25 deep-cleansing wipes are infused with bamboo fibre, witch hazel and chamomile, which help to remove daily impurities and combat acne-prone and sensitive skin. A perfect cruelty-free alternative to Johnson & Johnson baby wipes or Andrex body wipes!

charcoal aldiLacura Charcoal Micellar Water, €2.99/200ml, and Lacura Charcoal Face Wipes, €1.99/25 pack, available in 130 Aldi stores nationwide

Stay Hydrated!

Make sure to drink 2 litres of water every day at your festival. Not only is your skin exposed to more sun at festivals, but also to environmental factors and pollution like cigarette smoke. Not to mention you may indulge in the odd alcoholic beverage- staying hydrated is a must! It’s also important to keep your skin hydrated from the outside by using a concentrated, hydrating serum. Cruelty-free and vegan Irish brand Nía’s Vitality Super Vitamin Serum contains all the ingredients to make your skin smile, with detoxifying wheatgrass, nourishing acai and radiance-boosting Vitamin C.

It retails at €49.95 and is available at www.nia.ie.

No Sweat, No Fret!

Keep sweat at bay with the most effective natural deodorant on the market, Pit Putty! This amazing brand is a staple favourite of Flawless and Pawless. 100% vegan, cruelty-free and handmade in Ireland, Pit Putty is free from nasty chemicals like aluminium oxide and parabens, which are often found in other deodorants. Choose from the following aromatic scents: Lavender, Lemongrass & TeaTree, Three Flowers, Lime Basil & Mandarin, and Vanilla.

Pit Putty Natural Deodorant, €11.95, available at Skinfull Affairs and in selected stores nationwide

Deodorise your hands! Organic alcohol derived from sugar beet keeps any unwanted germs away with Botanicals Organic Sanitiser. As it’s made of 100% natural ingredients, it’s suitable for all skin types. This lavender and tea tree-scented miracle worker also doubles up as a deodorant, and it comes in a handy 50ml spray bottle.

Use an SPF!

The last thing anyone wants at a festival is to be burnt from head to toe, sweaty and hungover with two days left of partying! Lacura’s best-selling Moisturising Sun Spray SPF30+ not only protects your skin from harsh UV rays, but it acts against severe hydration and hyper pigmentation for perfect festival beauty. With its long-lasting formula, your skin is sure to feel hydrated all day and night.

Keep Nasty Insects Bites at Bay!

Insect bites have the power to make one’s life miserable at a festival, and it can be difficult to find an insect repellent that is 100% cruelty-free. That is, until now! Caribbean Blue Citronella Spray is a natural, spray-on insect repellent that is made from pure essential oils as well as sustainable ingredients. The perfect cruelty-free and natural alternative to chemical, DEET-based repellents, this citronella concoction has been proven to repel mosquitos, midges and other unwanted, hungry bugs. What’s more, the Citronella Spray is EPA approved and is registered with the Florida Department of Agriculture. A complete bargain for conscientious folk!

Caribbean Blue Citronella Spray, €10.30, available at Zen Luxury Living

Freshen Up Your Locks

It can be difficult to find a 100% cruelty-free dry shampoo, with the likes of Batiste faking a ‘leaping bunny’ logo on their packaging, but are meanwhile selling in China- where it is required by law for all cosmetics to be tested on animals. But fear not, as celebrity stylist Phil Smith’s BE GORGEOUS haircare range offers an affordable variety of Leaping Bunny certified dry shampoos! Choose from volumising, brunette, refreshing and nourishing formulas to keep your hair fresh, bouncy and feeling clean throughout the weekend.

Phil Smith BE GORGEOUS Dry Clean Dry Shampoo, €2.30, available at Sainsburys

The Perfect Base

For the perfect canvas to cover up any signs of tiredness, Essence’s best-selling Fresh and Fit foundation is great for a beautiful festival look. Its light, creamy texture is adaptable to all skin types, and its skin-awakening ingredients ensure a long-lasting, high coverage look that lasts all day long.

With several shades to choose from, it’s available in Penneys/Primark and selected pharmacies nationwide for €6.25

All of the above products are 100% cruelty-free and the products that are 100% vegan are outlined in their description in this article. None of these brands are owned by a parent company that tests on animals. All products are available in Ireland either in Irish department stores/pharmacies or are available to ship to Ireland.

A cruelty-free festival makeup feature will be soon to follow ❤ xx

This Cruelty-Free Sun Care Range is All Your Family Needs to Stay Sun Safe This Summer

Did you know that the majority of SPFs are- at some point- tested on animals by ingredient suppliers? Because of this, it can be difficult to find an SPF that is 100% cruelty-free (that is, if a brand is not officially cruelty-free). For a brand to be listed on Flawless and Pawless as cruelty-free, the company must ensure that their raw ingredients are not tested on animals, and that their suppliers and manufacturers don’t test on animals, and of course that the product has not been tested on animals at any stage during the production process.

Unfortunately, many brands can claim to be ‘cruelty-free’, but source their SPF from a supplier who has tested it on animals prior to it being bought and used by the company. But fear not! Grocery giant Aldi boasts its Lacura cosmetic range, which offers a family-friendly range of 100% cruelty-free SPF to keep adults, children and babies safe this summer. Lacura is certified by The Leaping Bunny Program by Cruelty Free International, the only internationally recognised certification program- and also the most reliable cruelty-free certification. For a brand to be certified by The Leaping Bunny, their entire line is scrutinised and is required to supply independent audits.

Organic Beauty: The Ultimate Cruelty Free Facial at Peaches and Lime Beauty Salon

A recent discovery of mine, Peaches and Lime Beauty Salon is located above New Image Hair Salon in Stillorgan, Co. Dublin. Literally a stone’s throw away from my home, I was delighted to discover the variety of cruelty-free treatments that this gem of a salon provides. Not only this, but the salon ensures that all of the brands that they use are 100% organic, so you can feel assured that they are actually good for you!

The star behind this unique salon is Erica, a fully-qualified nutritionist. Erica has been featured on RTE demonstrating massage and facial techniques, and is known for giving her clients in the salon complete nutritional advice. Her strong ethos believes that beauty starts from the inside, and that a healthy diet provides more long-lasting results than quick-fix machine treatments. Erica ensures that all of the cosmetics used are not only organic, but are preservative and toxin-free, making her salon a revolutionary experience for her clients.

Clients can avail of a range of treatments, including:

  • Phyt’s Facials
  • Jouvé Anti-Ageing Treatments
  • Massage
  • Vita Liberata Spray Tan
  • Full Makeup Application with Coleur Caramel Makeup

I was invited to try the Phyt’s Discovery Facial. Phyt’s 100% Organic Skincare is an all-in-one brand that tackles all skin concerns conscientiously. The cruelty-free formulas are enriched with essential oils, herbs, vegetal oils and are naturally high in minerals, vitamins and proteins to quench the skin’s thirst for balanced nutrition.

As many of you know, due to illness my skin has been on the drier side- without being a dry skin type. My makeup often ends up flaking around my nose, emphasising my pores. I expressed to Erica that I would like to both deeply cleanse my skin in order to unclog my pores, but to also deeply hydrate the skin to help replenish the epidermis back to its natural state.

The treatment began with a luxurious Lemon cleanse. The cleanser glided smoothly across my face and neck, and Erica made sure to also give my decolletage area and shoulders some love, too. While all of the grime and dirt was cleansed from my skin, I had the pressure points on my feet massaged with oils by beauty therapist, Vilma. This was heaven already.

Once my skin was completely cleansed and all leftover residue was removed, Erica applied serum to any areas where whiteheads and blackheads peaked there heads out from. She then proceeded to extract these little nasties gently with a metal remover tool, which was thorough but not painful like those pimple poppers you buy in the local chemist. Once this was done, Erica smoothed a gorgeous ylang ylang exfoliator across my face, neck and decolletage area, scrubbing gently with long strokes to remove any dead skin cells and even out my skin tone.

Vilma moved on to massage my hands and arms, giving me a full-body experience. Erica removed the exfoliant from my skin and used a gorgeous toner to remove any residue, tighten and close the pores. She then performed a lymphatic drainage massage across my face, neck, shoulders and decolletage area, which sent my mind into a complete state of bliss.

The treatment finished with a hydrating and skin-balancing moisturiser, which absorbed so quickly and left my skin feeling divine. I could barely talk after the treatment as I was in such a daze- this is, for sure, the best facial I have ever had. Erica’s expertise and Vilma’s technique combined provided a truly rejuvinating and relaxing experience. What’s more, each product smelt and felt gorgeous, and the entire treatment was cruelty-free!

To book the Phyt’s Discovery Facial at Peaches and Lime Beauty, 45 min, €60.00, call Erica on 01-2056709, and follow them on social media (peachesandlimebeauty) to keep up to date with all of their amazing organic and cruelty-free treatments.

Shave Like a Vegan: This Konjac Sponge is the Modern Gentleman’s Best Friend

A product I don’t think I could live without! Growing up, I remember that I always used sea sponges that my family would buy for us when we went on holiday. However, once I started to look more into the sourcing of standard sponges, I was gradually put off.

Standard sea sponges are a species of ‘porifera’ which means ‘pore bearing.’ Many people think that sponge is a kind of crop similar to seaweed, but sponge is a living sea-creature. Although it doesn’t have a brain or a central-nervous system, the sponge’s body consists of porous membranes that are about two cells thick. It feeds by filtering sea water through the pores and collecting sea-particles and plankton.

The harvesting of sea sponge is generally not sustainable and contributes towards the destruction of the ocean’s natural reefs. Sponge helps filter and purify sea water, and with the popularity of the animal’s skincare benefits, it is mass-harvested, ridding many oceanic ecosystems of this essential animal.

Although there are plastic alternative to sponges, they are generally not very sustainable or reusable, and they often break down easily which can clog plumbing systems. However, The Konjac Sponge Company is the revolutionary brand that has changed the sponge world for the better.

The Konjac Sponge is a vegan and eco-friendly alternative to standard sea sponge. Konjac, or konnyaku (not to be confused with the alcoholic drink, cognac), is a plant native to East Asia – specifically in Japan, South Korea, North Korea and China. This perennial plant has been used in East Asian culture for thousands of years – especially in cuisine, medicine and beauty. Used as a low-calorie substitute for seafood and meat, konyakku is made of 97% water and is rich in minerals. The plant grows in high altitude volcanic regions which have mineral rich soil.

The Konjac Sponge Company have utilised this plant to create a cruelty-free alternative to sea sponges. Hand-made in the South Korean island of Jeju, The Konjac Sponge Company guarantees a 100% natural, biodegradable, naturally sustainable, vegan and cruelty free product.

The Leaping Bunny certified company, based in the United Kingdom, sent me the Konjac Gentleman’s Shaving Sponge to try out. I have very sensitive skin and am very prone to ingrown hairs and shaving rashes. The website for the company claims that the Konjac sponge can help with these problems so I was excited to give it a go. This particular sponge is saturated with bamboo charcoal. Bamboo, a variety of grass, is a fast growing crop which allows for sustainable plant usage. Charcoal is rich in activated carbon which absorbs toxins, absorbs excess oils and fights bacteria. I am a big fan of charcoal products and have been using them for a while.

The sponge comes in a recyclable clear plastic and card packet. Upon first observation, the sponge was dried up but visibly porous. When re-hydrated with water, the hard sponge transforms into a silky soft, moist sponge. In comparison to a sea sponge, the Konjac sponge is much bouncier and softer. I used it first after arriving home after a long day at university. The sponge was delightful to use on my skin – it removed any oils and dirt that accumulated on my face throughout the day, but left it feeling hydrated and healthy. From then on, I used it daily before and after I shaved and before I went to bed. I have definitely noticed the effect that the sponge has had on my skin – it has reduced redness, helped reduce oil overproduction, cleans my pores – especially on my nose, and has helped to rid of ingrown hairs that I get from shaving.

I was amazed by how quick and efficient this products took to take effect. I ended up buying the Konjac 6 Wave Body Sponge with Bamboo Charcoal to help the folliculitis I have on my legs. Within two days, the sponge had helped to reduce inflammations and spots on my legs caused by the folliculitis. I now use the Konjac Sponge daily in the shower and it helps to keep my folliculitis at bay.

As a vegan, cruelty free and environmentally friendly substitute to the sea sponge, I can now have a guilty free sponge experience. I am very excited to try out other sponges in the range. The Konjac Sponge Company boasts a variety of different products infused with different minerals to help fight certain skin conditions, and in different shapes and sizes designed for different body parts and skin problems. I could not recommend this product more.

The Konjac Sponge Company’s Konjac Gentleman’s Shaving Sponge with Bamboo Charcoal retails for €11.35 and is available to purchase directly from this link.

This New Vegan Brush Collection is the Ultimate Full-Face Brush Kit

When making conscientious decisions about purchasing cosmetics, one of the most important decisions you can make is about your makeup brushes. What are they made from? Will they irritate your skin? Or do you worry that they may not pick up makeup products perfectly, leaving you with a patchy and unnatural finish? Vegan makeup brushes have been on the cosmetic radar for a while now, but it can be difficult to find ones that are actually effective as well as long-lasting. This is where I would like to introduce you to the magical world of NIMA Brush!

It feels like only yesterday that I was at my first day of MUA college, and the woman behind NIMA Brush, Niamh Martin, handed me my first set of professional makeup brushes. The award-winning range is handmade in Ireland, with both professional makeup artists and makeup lovers in mind.

FUN FACT: On my first day of MUA college when Niamh Martin introduced the class to NIMA Brush, she gave us an important tip to look after our brushes: DON’T GIVE YOUR BRUSHES A BATH! This causes the glue that hold the brushes together to separate, causing the bristles to fall out, and this hence destroys the brush. Thanks Niamh!

In association with IBIZA FASHION FESTIVAL, NIMA has created an innovative collection of 100% vegan makeup brushes. The festival focuses on promoting sustainable fashion, ethically-sourced fabrics and materials and how to recycle garments, which all perfectly ties in with these brand new, ethically-produced makeup brushes by NIMA.

So, what are the brushes made of?

  • The hairs are made from a high tec new fibre technology created by NIMA called Nimafi™. This innovative technology is created using Micron Crystal Technology, which allows the synthetic bristles to mimic the design and movement of natural hair. These tiny crystals attach themselves to the synthetic fibres, creating the perfect pro MUA brush effect.

The new vegan range consists of two collections, the Vegan Veluxe Collection, and The Eye Spy Collection.

Vegan Veluxe Collection, €65.00

  • Consists of six professional-length contour brushes for full-face application
  • The brush collection is suitable for the application of: Foundation, concealer, powder, contour, bronzer, highlighter and blusher.

The Eye Spy Collection, €40.00

  • Consists of seven professional-length, soft detail brushes for complete eye makeup application
  • The brush collection is suitable for the application of: Eyeshadow, eyebrow definition and eyeliner

Both of the vegan collections come with an organically woven drawstring bag to store the brushes in on-the-go, and are available at www.nimabrush.com

Let’s Get Lit! The Vegan and Eco-Friendly Candles That Are Transforming the Irish Candle Industry

There’s nothing like getting home after a long day of work/college/life, boiling the kettle and lighting a few candles to wind down. As someone who has always been obsessed with candles, I’m always looking for interesting new scents to try and am forever searching for a forever-burning candle. However, I only recently discovered the harmful chemicals that regular paraffin wax candles can emit.

It’s no coincidence that paraffin wax candles are linked to migraines and nausea, as they usually contain the following chemicals when burned:

  • Benzene
  • Acetone
  • Lead
  • Mercury

Known worldwide as potentially cancerous and allergenic ingredients, the formulas of most paraffin wax candles is a potential hazard in your everyday life, and may be doing you more harm than good. This is where the magic of soy-based candles come into play.

Emma’s So Naturals is an Irish cruelty-free and vegan brand created by Emma Fallon, who hand-makes all of her products, sources all of her ingredients from natural origins, and tests her formulas on herself only. Fallon is one of the original candle makers to develop an all-natural range of soy-based candles, using only 100% pure soy and pure essential oils. It’s no surprise that Emma’s So Naturals is taking over the Irish candle industry by storm.

The candles are also 100% VEGAN, are palm-free and are free from paraffin, perfume, synthetic fragrance and artificial dyes.

Sweat Like a Vegan: How Irish Brand Pit Putty is Making People Less Smelly!

If you haven’t heard of Pit Putty yet, you might as well grab some popcorn, a cuppa tea and get prepared to learn about the NO.1 DEODORANT on the cruelty-free Irish market. Having trialled and tested various cruelty-free and even vegan deodorants for quite some time now, none of them successfully kept my pits smelling fresh and feeling clean, if you will. That was until I discovered Pit Putty.

I suffer from anxiety, which makes me quite prone to hot flushes and the occasional random sweat (lovely!). I also suffer from OCD, so I constantly like to feel fresh- which can sometimes lead to me showering twice in one day (working on it!). The problem with many deodorants on the market is that, despite a cruelty-free status, they can be full of toxic chemicals like aluminium oxide, parabens, steareths and propylene glycol, to name a few. It’s not uncommon to hear that the components found in spray deodorants are linked to breast cancer, so finding a deodorant that is free from toxic chemicals is so important. It’s also difficult to find unisex deodorants that are free from toxic chemicals that are suitable for the entire family to use.

Pit Putty was created by natural skin fanatics and husband and wife, Luke and Laura. The couple wanted to create an effective, natural deodorant that actually worked on both men and women. After years of trialling and testing various formulas, eventually Pit Putty was born.

So what makes Pit Putty special?

  • Pit Putty is vegan friendly!
  • The formula is free from aluminium oxide
  • It’s also free from parabens
  • The deodorants are made of 100% natural ingredients
  • The range is cruelty free!

Pit Putty deodorants are concocted with a blend of plant oils, butters, naturally mined powders and pure essential oils, and are handmade in Ireland.

What scents are available?

Lemongrass and Teatree

Pit Putty’s best seller

Contains natural lemongrass essential oils to uplift the spirit

Teatree oil gives the formula antibacterial properties

Lime, Basil and Mandarin

An earthy, but sweet scent

Flattering on both sexes

Lavender and Lemon

Relaxing and healing

Uplifting lemon creates peace of mind

Three Flowers

Geranium Rose Oil, Lavender Oil and Ylang Ylang Oil

A sweet, floral scent

For those with a sweet tooth!

I personally don’t have a favourite scent, as they’re all divine. I love using the Lemongrass and Teatree every morning as it helps to wake me up, I use the Lavender one for relaxing weekends, and I use the Three Flowers one if I’m going out (it’s so perfumey and dreamy). My boyfriend, Karl, loves the Lime, Basil and Mandarin one, as it smells just like green winegum sweets.

The texture of the deodorants upon application is fabulous. It instantly feels like your pits are nourished, yet instantly dried and protected. I also love that as you rub it in, there’s a very slight exfoliating texture (what a weird thing to like). The verdict? I feel dry all day using these deodorants, and I’ve never felt so confident about my anxiety sweats. Bring it on.

All Pit Putty deodorants are priced at €11.95 and are available in over 30 stockists across Ireland including health stores, pharmacies and shops. You can find out your nearest stockist with Pit Putty’s store locator here.

Since this article was published in April 2017, Flawless and Pawless has become the Brand Ambassador for Pit Putty, having tried the product for months and achieving excellent results.
